Algeria 1-1 Russia
Algeria made it to the knockout round of 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup 32 years after West Germany and Austria denied them at Espana 82.
The African representatives came from behind to equalize Kokorin’s goal he scored in the 6th minute. Alexsandr Kokorin rose high in the Algerian box to plant a bullet header past M’Bolhi off Dimitri Kombarov’s left wing cross.
Algeria grabbed the equaliser in the second half thanks to Islam Slimani’s header in the 59th minute off a corner that was looped to the far post.
Russia looked to be in control for much of the first half but the final score did not favour the 2018 World Cup hosts as they headed home following a disappointing campaign.
The Algerian goal was however an attraction of controversy as television footage revealed a laser from the crowd had been shone in the face of Russian goalkeeper Igor Ankineev before the goal. Despite the query Algeria qualified joining Group winners Belgium.
Belgium 1-0 South Korea
Jan Vertonghen’s late winner for Belgium sent the side through to last 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup despite going one man down at the end of the first half.
Steven Defour was sent off for a dangerous studs up tackle which touched Kim’s shin but Belgium looked extremely lethal on the counter even after.
South Korea had the numbers upfront and substitute Lee Keunho had a shot stopped as both teams were giving it a right go. Jan Vertonghen was on duty at the back too, when he slid to dispossess South Korea’s Son Heung-min in the 64th minute.
Adnan Januzaj slotted a nice pass for Fellaini from the right flank to the edge of the penalty area in the 54th minute. Fellaini was brought down by Kim Young-gwon but no penalty was given when he appealed for it.
Belgium face the United States in the second round and Klinsmann will have to plenty of firepower in Eden Hazard and Dries Merten to elevate him to the next stage.
