Abdallah Mubiru Credit: John Batanudde

Overview:

Across all competitions in his tenure in charge, the former Uganda Cranes, Vipers and Police coach has managed 58 games and won 30 of those (31 if the Mbarara win wasn’t overturned), leaving him with a win percentage of 52%.

Abdallah Mubiru’s reign at KCCA finally came to an end on Thursday with the club announcing his departure late in the night.

The gaffer conducted training on Thursday morning and was only told of his axing on phone later in the evening leaving Jackson Magera and Sakka Mpiima in charge.

The KCCA board managed to pull a plug on Mubiru following a 4-0 defeat at Kitara in the premier league on Saturday.

Mubiru leaves KCCA after a year and close to four months in charge after he replaced Portuguese Sergo Traguil a few games into the 2023/24 season.

He leaves KCCA in 6th position with 34 points and into the quarter finals of the Stanbic Uganda where Fufa Big League side Kaaro Karungi is lurking as the next opponents.

After a good end to last season in which he lifted the Kasasiro from relegation zone to finish in 5th place, and good start to the new season, it appeared Mubiru had already been given a stay of execution.

The brilliant start to the season, despite the club failing to keep star man Muhammad Shaban, Herbert Achai and Mustafa Kizza as well as failure to get most of his transfer targets gave the KCCA faithful hope of an ending a trophy drought at Lugogo.

However, things start to deteriorate with the team running out of form and this was partly due to inconsistencies especially up front where Derrick Nsibambi, Sadat Anaku and Usama Arafat who were supposed to take the goal scoring responsibilities got affected with nagging injuries that kept them out of many games.

Frustration amongst fans was evident when the club won just two matches in eleven league outings between November and March and it got worse when the club lost points on forfeiture to Mbarara City for fielding Gavin Kizito who was ‘suspended’ turning a hard-fought victory into a defeat.

It didn’t help when defeats to title rivals NEC and Vipers came along literally ending the KCCA title aspirations.

The tide appeared to change in March with the club progressing to latter stages of the Stanbic Uganda Cup and also won league matches with huge score lines until the loss to Kitara became the final straw.

The news came a shock given Mubiru’s contract was a few months from expiry and he appeared on saving the season by targeting the Uganda Cup.
