Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team (Gazelles) head coach Nicholas Natuhereza has revealed a provisional squad ahead of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement released today, Tuesday, July 1, 2025 via the Gazelles’ official social media handles.
A squad of 13 players has been selected to represent Uganda in the continent’s best nations’ basketball tournament.
However, Evelyn Nakiyingi’s inclusion has been the surprise package, more so after missing out on recent national team engagements. Her inclusion is a reason to celebrate in the Basketball fraternity.
The JKL Lady Dolphins’ point guard has been away from the National side since the emotional heroics witnessed in the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda.
Nakiyingi will vie for a starting slot alongside Shakira Nanvubya, who put up a decent show in the recent AfroBasket qualifiers.
Natuhereza noted that they are focused on getting the pieces together as soon as possible ahead of the continental showpiece.
“We are focused on trying to get the roster together, fill some pieces, some gaps that were left by some players that are not available like Lydia Babirye, Maxine Anyango and Bushira Namayanja,” the gaffer noted.
“We have been trying to update the roster from the qualifiers and also have a better team than the one we had at the last AfroBasket. Practice will help us get the players back to the same page,” he concluded.
Uganda was drawn in Group C alongside Senegal and Guinea.
