The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, Gazelles, secured a hard-fought 73-70 victory against Senegal in the Women’s AfroBasket on Monday.
Gazelles cruised to a second victory in as many games following a dominant win (88-51) against Guinea. The victory takes them to four points in two games and seals a direct quarterfinal slot.
Despite falling behind by eight points early in the opening period, Nicholas Natuhereza called for a timeout, allowing the Gazelles to recollect and regroup.
Claire Lamunu’s clutch three-point shot gave the Gazelles the edge, concluding the opening period with a one-point (17-16) lead.
The Gazelles kept the foot on the gas pedal as they took a nine-point (37-28) lead going into the halftime break in full confidence.
However, returning from the locker rooms, the Gazelles were limited to only eight points as they trailed by four points (49-45) at the end of the third quarter.

Paige Robinson scored a big 3-point jumpshot to level matters 61-61 at the end of the fourth quarter, sending the game to overtime.
The Gazelles held their nerves to secure a 3-point victory on the day.
Jane Asinde scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Uganda. Paige Robinson, who came alive in the second half, finished with a team high 19 points, Hope Akello contributed 15 points to go with 6 boards while Claire Lamunu chipped in with 10.
Only Cierra Dillard (15) and Yacine Diop (10) scored in double figures for Senegal.
