South Africa take on Guinea in the must win clash for the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) at Namboole on Monday.
The Bafana Bafana held favourites Algeria to a 1-1 draw in their tournament opener and face a side desperate to return to winning ways after suffering a 3-0 loss to co-hosts Uganda in their last game despite winning their opener 1-0 against Niger.
Head coach of South Africa, Molefi Ntseki was impressed by the performance in the draw with Algeria but knows nothing but victory will give his side chance of progression.
“The first game served as a real icebreaker for us, and we managed to fulfil that objective,” said Ntseki. “The performance was at the right level and was reflected in the result achieved against a solid team. Now, we are in fourth place in the group, with just one point, and we know we have to surpass ourselves in the next game,” he added.
Ntseki is acutely aware of the margins in a group he describes as “very competitive, with well-prepared teams.” He knows only a top-level display will be enough to claim the win his side needs.
Guinea coach Souleymane Camara has sent warning to South Africa saying his side will be out to win.
“I believe tomorrow’s game is there to be won. I am responsible for this team and I remind my players that they can win,” the Guinea coach said.
“We have had enough time to rest and I believe they are recovered. It’s not the fact that we lost that takes away our hope. Our objective is still alive.”
At the moment, Algeria leads the standings with 4 points followed by Uganda & Guinea on 3pts, South Africa are 4th with a point while Niger is at the bottom with none.
In the later game on the day, co-hosts Uganda take on Niger in a make or break tie for either.
