Shamim Bangi had a chance of playing in a third straight doubles finals and probably a third straight double’s gold at the Zambian International but a terrible headache denied her the chance. Instead settling for bronze, her third straight medal in the doubles in a space of four weeks

Bangi who was teaming up with Zambian Ogar Siamupangila was forced to retire midway the game because of a strong headache. The duo was leading the South African pair of De Villiers Elme and Butler Emmett Michelle 1-0 after taking the first set 21-8. Bangi said;
It’s too hot here and it affected me, I badly wanted to go for the second set and finish the job but the headache couldn’t allow me, We had them (Elme and Butler) were we wanted them but I can’t couldn’t play more which was disappointing but couldn’t do anything about it.
Bangi couldn’t get in the medal bracket of the singles after De Villiers defeated her in the quarters 2-1 (21-14, 16-21, 21-15). She had seen off Edwin Tanana 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) in the first round, edging out Egyptian Nadine Ashiraf 2-1 (21-16, 14-21, 21-15) in the second.

“Despite not getting in the last four which was a target, I think I did good in the singles, if you’re to factor in the terrible weather conditions we have had to endure while here.De Villiers is a good player, me getting a set off her was a also proof that I pushed her to the wall.” she added.

Attention will now turn to the South African International where the 21-year old had resisted for the Singles, Doubles and missed doubles next weekend. She will also be participation in the Botswana International in two weeks’ time.
