The sport of basketball is an engaging game that entails aggression, diligence, precision, teamwork, individual brilliance, endurance, commitment, speed, quick-thinking, stamina, reaction and patience, all in the same vein.
In reality, these are key elements of humanity that apply in every-day life.
It is therefore not surprising that the organizers of the annual Aviation week celebrations, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) thought of this particular sport to usher in the fete.

For starters, the Aviation week usually happens in the first week of December, marking the signing of the Chicago Convention in 1944 which gave birth to the ICAO, which oversees the aviation operations across the globe.
This week was first celebrated in 1994 at the 50th Anniversary of the signing for the Convention and since then, the member states of ICAO, including Uganda have celebrated the event annually.
The start of the celebrations in Uganda this year commenced with a successful basketball gala held at the CCCC basketball court (Entebbe International Airport) and the DustyVille Basketball Court adjacent Entebbe Municipal Council.

There were eight teams in contention; divided into two groups (A and B). By close of business, UCCA team A won the championship; having defeated all the opponents in thy midst, triumphing in the final 34-31 over Legacy Riders team.
The likes of Patrick Mwesigye, Andrew Kwesiga, Max Mutalyebwa, Brandon M, Amin Ntambi, Cathy Haruri, Derrick Birungi and others constituted the winning team.
The bronze medal match was won by Jinja Kalooli who defeated The Archers 31-28.

“This is the second time that Basketball was being part as part of the Aviation week celebrations.” Vianny Mpuungu Lugya, the public relations officer at Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCCA) spoke.
“This event has become an important tradition for us in the aviation industry as it brings together our stakeholders not in the boardroom, runways or control towers, but on the Basketball court, united by teamwork and friendly competition” Lugya added.
UCCA is cognizant of the important ways in which sports especially basketball brings people together.
“Sports people are also traditionally known to be frequent fliers and users of our facilities at Entebbe International Airport as they compete in not only local, but also regional and international events” Luggya noted.

UCAA will also sponsor this year’s Seniors Golf championship on 6th and 7th December 2025 at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.
Annually, UCCA also sponsors the Rwabushenyi memorial chess championship which is in honour of the former director of airports and aviation security, the late Cyril Rwabushenyi.
Rwabushenyi is also a founder member of the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF).
“I want to thank all the teams participating, the organizers and our partners who make the aviation week a meaningful celebration of the work we do everyday in keeping the Ugandan skies safe and our services efficient” Luggya concluded.
UCAA will also organize the annual stakeholders’ engagement workshop on the 12th December 2025 at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
