Uganda She Cranes Margaret Bagaala in action

Following their triumph at the 2025 Celtic Cup in Glasgow, Scotland, Uganda’s Senior Women’s Netball Team, She Cranes, has swiftly shifted focus to the upcoming Africa Netball Cup.

Uganda is one of eight sides set to compete in the continental showpiece, which runs from December 8th to 14th in Lilongwe, Malawi.

According to She Cranes captain Lilian Ajio, the recent success in Scotland provides crucial momentum. “We faced a strong challenge in the Celtic Cup, but emerging as champions is a testament to the hard work the team put in,” she stated.

Ajio acknowledged the need for continued improvement: “We made a few mistakes, and if we work on those, I am confident we will be a decent side. We know the Africa Cup will not be easy, but the lessons and experience gathered will be useful going forward.”

The stakes at the Africa Cup are particularly high as the tournament also serves as a qualifying stage for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney.

Uganda is drawn into Pool A alongside regional rivals Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Pool B features hosts Malawi, South Africa, Botswana, and Tanzania.

In last year’s championship, the She Cranes lost 65-50 to South Africa in the final. However, that result was largely attributed to poor preparation following a two-year suspension of netball activities in Uganda.
