She Wolves have exceeded expectations in the 2025 Uganda Cup by reaching the final of the tournament.
They started off on a low note, narrowly losing 15-13 to the Ewes, but they recovered by annihilated the Kigezi Queens 100-00, in a game where the captain Gladys Wilembe scored 8 tries. Tragedy struck again when they visited the Avengers in Entebbe, losing 24-05, in a game that exposed the need to beef up in size for the 15s code.
Despite the unavailability of 5 of their starting players, and even requesting for a postponement, the She Wolves rose to the occasion in the semifinal, edging the Panthers 10-05.
Emerging from that scrappy encounter ensured they made club history, with the opportunity to keep their fairytale run alive in the final.
“We’re proud of how the team handled the semifinal, especially with some key players unavailable. Their return brings more depth, experience, and stability to the group. But most importantly, they lift the confidence of the entire squad. We’re excited to have them back for the final,” noted Hamissi Katumba, the She Wolves coach.
In the all Eastern Uganda final, the She Wolves of Mbale are up against the Nile Rapids of Jinja. The Rapids, who are the defending champions of the Uganda Cup, have since grown comfortable in the 15s game, upsetting the Avengers once again.
“Our focus isn’t on past results, our focus is on our preparation and performance. We respect every opponent, but we also believe in our own ability. If we stick to our processes, stay disciplined, and play our style of rugby, we give ourselves a real chance. We’re not here to participate; we’re here to compete,” Katumba added.
The Mbale outfit has faced various challenges in their rugby journey, from absence of players, to working within a deficit budget for transport and accommodation for players and staff. The latest challenge comes in the form of lack of proper footwear for the players.
Coach Katumba made a humble plea to the public. “I call on for support from everyone around the globe. If there’s anyone who can help She Wolves with boots please. It will be so embarrassing playing bare footed on an international scene.”
