Senegal legend Sadio Mane has sent shockwaves through the footballing world by announcing that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be his final appearance in the prestigious competition.

The announcement came shortly after Mane netted a dramatic late winner against Egypt, securing the Teranga Lions a spot in the final of the continental showpiece.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, the 33-year-old forward revealed he is ready to hang up his continental boots following Sunday’s title decider.

”I will play my very last AFCON game on Sunday,” Mane stated. “I am a soldier for my country. I try to give my all every day, whether it is in training or in matches.

“The most important thing is to bring this trophy back home, to be able to play my very last AFCON in a final with the Lions is a blessing. I hope we win and bring it home.”

Reflecting on the tough encounter with the Pharaohs, Mane emphasised that his winning goal was not merely a personal achievement, but rather the reward for a collective effort.

”Honestly, it is a feeling of great pride. We knew it would be tough because Egypt is a great side with a lot of experience. But today, the most important thing is the togetherness that has seen us progress. My goal was simply a reward for the team’s hard work.”

With just one match remaining in his storied AFCON career, Mane’s message to the Senegalese people remained one of focus and grit. He insisted that while the final represents an emotional milestone, the job is far from over.

As Mane prepares for his third AFCON final, the stakes could not be higher. For the “Son of Bambali,” lifting the trophy on Sunday would not just be a victory for Senegal, but the perfect curtain call for a legendary career.
