A graduate of Super cubs’ fabled academy, the attacking midfielder completed his move to URA FC from SC Victoria University.
The 20-year-old inspired the university side to a high second place position last season, and his fine performances in the CECAFA clubs Nile basin tournament in Khartoum last year made him the center of attraction both locally and Internationally.
Kenyan giants AFC leopards showed interest to price away the adroit midfielder though he decided to stay home, joining Uganda’s CAF confederations cup representatives -URA F.C.
Given SC Victoria’s nose dive performance and a chance to play in the continental competitions, it was an opportunity Yasser Mugerwa felt he could not reject at this stage of his career.
He is aware, though, that the move has left a sour taste to SC Victoria who spotted him from Nkumba University three years back. Telling Kawowo sports, Yasser said:
I never wanted anything to get messy, if that’s what happened. I don’t look a lot in to it or read a lot into it. I always wanted to leave on a good note and I’ll always have special memories of the fans, the players and people involved in the club. I am sure they (SCVU) will work upon those problems which have led to poor first round and am sure they are to put up different second round.
Yasser Mugerwa was one of the hosts of players to depart. Defender Juuko Murishid joined Tanzanian giants Simba, goalie Benjamin Ochan has of recent joined KCCA F.C and high towering defender Savio Kabungo continues to be linked to a number of clubs. Similarly Denis Iguma left for Lebanon and lately SC Villa is chasing for the signature of left back Isaac Muleme. The exodus of all these immense names has left the club in doldrums having initially endured an off-color first round.
With the U-23 call-up in focus, Mugerwa hopes to unleash an exciting new chapter with club and country.
I still feel I have a lot to learn and prove. I don’t think by any stretch I’m an established international. I have work hard to get this consistency.
The U-23 qualifiers await the near future, offering Yasser a chance to re-establish himself as a national team regular under Micho. He last featured in the National team colors last year in CHAN championships in South Africa. What should not escape people’s mind is that Mugerwa features in both grass football and beach soccer.
With even the sand cranes summon putting up signs, the Nkumba select player believes that he would rather feature for the Kobs incase the U-23 and Sand cranes came knocking at the same time. The two National sides are likely to collide in fixtures with players like Baker Lukooya, Brian Nkumbi and Derrick Tekkwo falling culprits.
I do play normal football and beach soccer which means I love both sports. On top of that the two games almost look similar. But I will go with normal football on any day if I receive both call-ups. ”Every person would love to give his best at National level and am no different.
The change in clubs saw the midfielder re-joining his former boss Alex Isabirye Musogola. The move also meant that the tax collectors were filling the void left by veteran Augustine Nsumba. Nsumba joined traditional rivals SC Villa.
Mugerwa was among the players his new paymasters URA F.C enlisted to CAF to take part in the CAF Confederations Cup due to take place next month.
