Senegal put up a spirited show to clinch the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in front of 66526 fans.
Senegal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Morocco in the 2025 AFCON final at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday.
Papa Gueye nearly gave Senegal the lead in the fourth minute but Morocco’s goalkeeper showed up, pulling off a stunning save.
Fourteen minutes later, Ismael Saibari was set up by Neil El Aynaoui but the forward wildly placed the ball off the target.
In the 38th minute, Illiman Ndiaye found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat but once again, Bounou pulled off a stunning save.
At the stroke of halftime, Noussair Mazraoui made a timely block to deny Lamine Camara of any sight on goal at the edge of the box.
Coming from the dressing rooms, Morocco looked the sharper side, throwing boarding upfront but failing to get past the well-organised Senegalese backline.
Ayoub El Kabbi put a clear chance to waste in the 58th minute after guiding the ball wide of the area with the goal at his disposal.
With two minutes to halftime, Ibrahim Mbaye beat his marker but his curling ball was parried away by goalkeeper Bounou.
On the other hand, Abde Ezzalzouli was set up by Mazraoui but his final effort went slightly above the crossbar.
There was tension as the referee awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR check. Senegal’s fans tried to force their way into the area of play but were halted by security.
After the chaos, Brahim Diaz stepped up to the ocassion but his effort was comfortably saved by Edourd Mendy.
In extra time, Papa Gueye broke the deadlock. He weaved past his markers, thus unleashing a powerful effort in the top corner of the net.
With 10 minutes to play, Cherif Ndiaye blew out a clear chance, placing the ball off the target with an empty net at his sight.
