The much-anticipated 2026 Sailfish Swim Club Masters Gala has been postponed following the Ministry of Health’s restrictions on certain mass gatherings in the Kampala Metropolitan Area and other high-risk districts during the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

The event, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 13, at Ambrosoli International School, was expected to bring together more than 150 swimmers from Uganda and across the globe for what promised to be the biggest edition of the competition since its inception.

In announcing the decision, the Sailfish Masters Swimming Gala Organising Committee emphasized that the health, safety and well-being of swimmers, spectators, volunteers, officials and partners remain its highest priority.

While the postponement comes as a disappointment to many athletes who had been preparing for months, organizers described it as the most responsible course of action under the current public health circumstances.

“We were looking forward to hosting the event, but postponement is the most responsible decision at this time,” the organizing committee noted in its communication to club leaders, coaches, administrators and masters swimmers.

The postponement delays what would have been the third edition of the Sailfish Swim Club Masters Gala, an event that has rapidly established itself as one of Uganda’s leading celebrations of adult swimming and active living.

Over the past three editions, the gala has evolved beyond a traditional competition into a gathering that promotes fitness, lifelong participation in sport and meaningful community engagement.

Unlike youth swimming competitions, masters swimming is specifically designed for adults aged 25 years and above, providing an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to remain physically active while enjoying the social benefits of the sport.

The gala attracts former competitive swimmers, recreational athletes, professionals, parents and fitness enthusiasts who come together not only to compete but also to network, build friendships and inspire healthier lifestyles.

Despite the postponement, the overwhelming response to the 2026 edition reflects the growing popularity of masters swimming in Uganda.

The event had attracted more than 150 entries from both Ugandan and international swimmers, making it the largest masters competition organized by Sailfish Swim Club to date.

The diverse field of participants highlights the event’s expanding reputation beyond Uganda’s borders and its role in connecting local swimmers with the global masters swimming community.

The increasing international participation also showcases Uganda as an emerging destination for aquatic sports while strengthening relationships between swimmers from different countries and cultures.

The Masters Gala is an opportunity to embrace healthy living, maintain fitness and demonstrate that competitive sport can remain part of life well beyond youth.

The event encourages adults to return to the pool, challenge themselves and become part of a supportive community where personal achievement is celebrated as much as podium finishes.

Organizers have confirmed that the Masters Gala has not been cancelled but postponed until further notice.

A new date will be communicated once the Ebola situation has been successfully managed and the relevant public health authorities advise that it is safe to proceed.

The revised schedule will also take into account the Uganda Aquatics calendar, which features major competitions including the Uganda National Swimming Championships in July and the CANA Zone 3 Championships in October.

This careful planning will ensure that the Masters Gala returns at a time that allows maximum participation while maintaining the highest standards of safety and organization.
