Julian Quiñones celebrates the opener against Ecuador

2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosts Mexico progressed to the round of 16 following a 2-0 victory against a 10-man Ecuador at the Mexico city stadium.

Two first half goals from Julián Andrés Quiñones Quiñones and Raúl Alonso Jiménez Rodríguez inspired the North Americans to a famous victory, the first at the FIFA World Cup knock out round in four decades.

Quinones, who features at Al-Qadisiyah in the Saudi Pro League gave the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute.

Ten minutes later, Fulham’s Jimenez sealed the victory.

Ecuador was reduced to 10-men with the sending off of Piero Hincapie deep in stoppage time.

Mexico now eye the round of 16 and will face either England or Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 5th July 2026 at the Mexico city stadium.

They join other co-hosts Canada at the round of 16.

Other countries at this stage include;  France, Paraguay, Brazil, Morocco and Norway.
