During the ongoing FEASSA Games in Morogoro, Tanzania, one force to reckon with ought to be Hamdan Islamic Secondary School from Nakifuma, Mukono Zone.
After qualifying as Uganda’s number 3 in Netball for the second successive time, Hamdan Islamic targets to play their first ever FEASSA final should they beat Kenya’s Bukhokholo S.S during a tense semifinal on Wednesday, August 19.
But who is behind this great success for a school that has lasted only four years in world of Netball.
Hamdan Islamic started the long journey back in 2023 under the stewardship of Coach Rajab Ssemakula and Sam Kabanda who made it qualify to their first USSSA Nationals in Kabale as Mukono’ s second best team behind Dynamic SS.
They would then recruit coach John Bosco Seguya from Canan High School in 2024 who has greatly contributed and transformed their team.
To them, qualifying for nationals was no longer a target, Seguya proudly says.
I had qualified for nationals with Canan High School at Lira and Kabale, so when I joined Hamdan, I had to shift my targets to East Africa and here we are.
John Bosco Seguya, Coach – Hamdan Islamic
Seguya has since made the Mukono District and Mukono Zone Netball trophies his to lose.
He has won them for three consecutive years 2024, 2025 and 2026, qualifying for nationals since he joined and qualifying for the dream FEASSA Games twice now in 2025 and 2026.
Despite failing to make it for FEASSA in 2024 (when they finished 11th), Seguya and Hamdan have played two consecutive USSSA national semifinals and FEASSA semifinals in 2025 and 2026.
Of course, God! But after Him, there is a long list of great people behind this success. My first CEO Mr. Mubarak Kalungi, he recruited me and has been behind me in all times, he is the brain behind this project and all we do, you may never see him with us always, but he is always with us.
My president at Canan Netball Club Musumba Bonny Frank Kaggwa, in spite of the fact that I left Canan High School, we remained very close friends, our girls played for his club in the second tier league and we qualified to the national league this season, we are still playing under his steward ship, may be that is what has given these girls a lot of playing time, confidence and resilience till now.
My top bosses at Hamdan Islamic right from the Director Hajj Yasin Kazibwe, the Head Teacher Mr. Ssali Yasin, my Deputy Mr. Ssengonzi Muzamil, the games teachers, Coach Success etc. Haaa, abaana bange! There are kids I cannot forget, I have been with some of these girls from P.3 or P.4, they would be enticed to join other schools but always refused and reported back, the likes of Rose (Goal Shooter), Sumaya (Center), Farida (Goal Defender), Subra (Goal Attacker) and others. I can not thank them enough.
My Headteacher at Katale progressive Mr. Nahurira. He has been patient with me since I was a young teen. People would tell him all sorts of things, but he would stick with me.
John Bosco Seguya, head coach Hamdan Islamic School
Amongst other factors, there is no doubt coach Seguya is the man behind the success of this school. As we closed off our interview with him, I asked him which person inspired him to join the game and without hesitation he says coach Muwanga.
Should Hamdan qualify for the finals, it shall be their second this year after playing the U17 USSSA finals early on in May at Seroma Christian High School. In the FEASSA Finals, they will take on St. Mary’s Kitende or St Noa Girls Zana who face off in the second FEASSA semifinal.
Who makes it? Your guess is as good as mine.
FEASSA Netball Semifinals 2026
- Hamdan Islamic (Uganda) Vs Bukhokholi SS (Kenya)
- St. Mary’Kitende (Uganda) Vs St. Noa girls School (Uganda)
Indeed coach seguya deserves may the Almighty Allah continue granting him success in all his endeavours..
