Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje has been appointed to serve as the head coach of Muteesa I Royal University. His appointment comes as the team prepares to defend their crown in the forthcoming University Football League.
It should be noted that the Royal Lions won their first title this year, defeating YMCA 1-0 in the final played at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo in May.
Mawejje, alongside his backroom staff, were unveiled on Wednesday at the University premises in Kilumba, Masaka.
“Welcome Tonny Mawejje as our new head coach. A true legend of the game, bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and tactical brilliance to lead the squad into this exciting new chapter,” reads part of the statement from the University.
He replaces George William Ssengabi, who led the team to success last season.
Mawejje, who retired in 2022, continues to grow his career into coaching and has been at several clubs already. He has so far worked at Wakiso Giants, Kampala Queens and St. Noa Girls.
On top of his coaching career, Mawejje also doubles as a football pundit on FUFA TV, especially for the Uganda Premier League games.
At Muteesa I Royal University, he will work alongside former Maroons, SC Villa and Masaka LC goalkeeper Ashadu Bugembe as the goalkeeping coach.
