Under the bright, unpredictable skies of the Lugogo Cricket Oval, Wanderers Cricket Club delivered a masterclass in resilience and youthful ambition on Saturday.

Sweeping both legs of their Men’s UG20 Cup Group B double header against Mukono Development Cricket Club, Wanderers showcased the potent combination of seasoned leadership and fearless emerging talent.

At the heart of the triumph was captain Ivan Kakande, whose stellar all-around performances earned him the Player of the Match honours in both encounters. Steering his team from the front, Kakande reflected on a day highlighted by twin victories- a 34-run win in the morning and an 84-run DLS triumph in the afternoon and the thriving future of the club.

  • Wanderers CC 156/6 in 20 Overs
  • Mukono Development CC 101 all out in 19.3 Overs
  • Wanderers CC won by 34 runs

The day began under favourable batting conditions after Kakande won the toss and elected to bat. Wanderers posted a competitive 135 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

The innings was masterfully anchored by Kakande himself, who hammered 35 off 29 balls. Solid contributions rippled through the order: Adonia Waibale chipped in with 28 off 30 deliveries, Julius Okema added 19 from 26, Eric Mukisa contributed 16 from 15, and Edgar Mudoola chipped in 11 off 11.

Mukono Development’s bowling attack fought hard through Edwin Nuwagaba’s two wickets, alongside single scalps from Kenneth Ogenerwot, Eric Matovu, London Muhanguzi, and Christian Mulindwa.

“The good thing we did in that game, because it looked like a pressure game, was that our batters batted well to get that score,” Kakande noted. “We had partnerships right from the top order and also the middle order.”

Chasing 136, Mukono Development saw a valiant 54 off 44 balls from Nuwagaba, featuring six fours and two sixes. However, Wanderers’ bowling corps squeezed the life out of the chase. London Muhanguzi managed seven, Steven Othieno nine, and Victor Mugisha ten before the visitors folded for 101 in 19.3 overs.

Eric Mukisa and Loykeen Bamuturaki starred with three wickets apiece, supported by two from Kakande, alongside disciplined spells from Mark Ruhweza and Julius Okema.

Carrying their momentum into the afternoon fixture, Wanderers faced a new adversary. Rain forced a reduction of the first innings to 16 overs, but Wanderers remained completely unfazed after winning the toss and choosing to bat once more.

  • Wanderers CC 159/4 in 16 Overs
  • Mukono Development CC 57 all out in 11.5 Overs
  • Wanderers CC won by 84 runs (D/L)

Kakande delivered the fireworks of the day, blasting 52 off just 26 balls, including 10 boundaries before retiring out. Eric Mukisa remained unbeaten with an explosive 36 off 23 balls (four fours, one six), Mudoola contributed 30 from 24, Okema added 11, and Mandeep Singh chipped in with eight, hoisting Wanderers to a formidable 159 for four.

“Getting into the second game, of course, we were disturbed by rain,” Kakande said. “But after winning the toss, we still batted first and put on a score of 159 runs. We managed to defend it.”

Mukono Development’s revised chase unravelled instantly. Nuwagaba and Othieno fell without scoring, Khalid Saleeh managed four, and London Muhanguzi contributed 19 before being run out. Ogenerwot added seven, but the innings collapsed to 57 for nine in 11.5 overs. Under the DLS method, Wanderers claimed an emphatic 84-run victory.

The bowling attack was ruthless: Loykeen Bamuturaki took two for 13 in three overs, Waheed Abdul Sserwadda claimed two for four in 1.5 overs, and Lennox Muhanguzi, Eric Mukisa, Mark Ruhweza, and debutant Aronda Katwesigye chipped in with wickets.

“Collectively, the bowlers still did well. We took all our chances, the fast bowlers bowled in the right areas, and the spinners bowled so well,” Kakande praised. “We got lots of dot balls and the morale was so good.”

Beyond the scorelines, Saturday marked a milestone for Wanderers’ developmental vision, featuring debuts for Aronda Katwesigye and Christabel Abenaitwe.

For Katwesigye, transitioning from school-level play to the tactical depths of club cricket was eye-opening. “The feeling was generally good, being able to start playing at professional level after last playing in the school week,” he shared.

“At school level, we never had this kind of strategising or different situations, for example, as we played today with the DLS method. So, it was the first experience, altogether a good feeling and good experience.”

Kakande emphasised that seeing the youth execute under pressure was the day’s greatest reward. “The positives we took away are that today, for instance, we had two debutants. They managed to bowl so well and field so well. Batting-wise, we looked at the young ones executing in the middle… and also thinking about the game,” he said, adding that continuous fixtures and training sessions remain vital for their evolution.
