Edrine Ekau will join Namuwongo Blazers for the upcoming Road to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) tournament, with the youngster expected to feature in the Under-21 player category.
Coach Steven Escodato confirmed Ekau’s inclusion, emphasising that the player is expected to make a meaningful contribution on the court rather than merely travel with the team.
“He is not just escorting the team. We want him to play because we look at him as a national team player,” Escodato stated.
Escodato added that he is ready to work with head coach Luis Lopez Hernandez to help Ekau develop and make the most of the opportunity.
“I am here to help Coach Luis to ensure that Ekau gets something,” he added.
Ekau’s inclusion is expected to provide Namuwongo with an additional option as the two-time National Basketball League champions seek to progress to the Elite 16 stage of the Road to BAL qualifiers.
While many see Ekau as a young player, his impressive performance with the Rezlife Saints last season confirmed that he is prepared for the big stage, and his shooting skills will be a major asset for the Blazers.
Namuwongo have appointed Spanish coach Luis Lopez Hernandez to lead their campaign, with the experienced tactician tasked with preparing the team for a competitive qualifying tournament.
The Blazers are seeking to make the most of their home assignment after falling short in their previous attempt at the Road to BAL stage.
With Ekau set to feature in the Under-21 category, his involvement could provide a valuable opportunity for the youngster to gain experience at continental club level while contributing to the team’s qualification ambitions.
The Blazers will host the tournament at Hoima City Arena from October 21 to 25, giving them the advantage of competing on home soil as they pursue qualification for the next stage.
