USPA July Best Sports Personality:

  • Winner: Dorcus Ajok
  • Runners Up: Ronald Otile

The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) voted athlete, Dorcus Ajok as the best sports personality for the month of July.

At the body’s monthly convention held at Imperial Royale Hotel on Monday, the sports journalists voted Ajok for winning gold in the 1500M race  with a time of 4:18:53 at the world university games held in Gwangju, South Korea.

The 23 year old promising athlete tallied 645 votes to beat Tooro club golfer, Ronald Otile, 20, who won the 73rd Uganda Golf open at the par 72 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante in Kampala.

Ajok was nominated by Urban T.V’s Thomas Muruka, who traveled with the Uganda team and witnessed first hand as the Ndejje University athelete won Uganda’s only gold at the games.

Otile, who was nominated by Daily Monitor’s Andrew Mwanguhya and seconded by Kawowo Sports’ Phillip Corry got 570 votes.

Muruka noted;

Ajok was first disqualified in the 800M semi-finals for stepping in the opponent’s line. Returning to scoop an individual gold at the world stage was a big achievement. By USPA recognizing her efforts will motivate her further in the career

The sports journalists commended golfer, Flavia Namakula for winning the Uganda Ladies Open, Uganda Rugby Cranes for the promotion to the Africa Tier A and two Junior weight lifters – Huzaifa Kawooya and Irene Kasuubo.

Kasuubo and Kawooya won three and two gold medals respectively at the recently concluded Africa Junior Youth weightlifting championships held at Imperial Botanical Hotel in Entebbe.

The sports journalists hosted officials from the Uganda fitness Association and Uganda Draughts Federation (UDF).

The meeting was presided over by the USPA president, Sabiti Muwanga, the general secretary Patrick Kanyomozi and several members.

Ajok will be crowned on Thursday, 13th August 2015 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala.
