Flyweight Ronald Sserugo will be the other boxer to represent Uganda at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in Brazil after light heavy Kennedy Katende.
Sserugo defeated Moroke Mokhotho from Lesotho in a split decision to win his bronze medal match on Saturday at the Africa Boxing Olympics Qualifiers in Cameroon Yaoundé just like Katende had done a day earlier.
It was a tough match, and I needed to be hard on the guy, that’s how I came out on top. I was more determined than never before
Sserugo told Kawowo sports before revealing his inspiration going into this match
After watching Katende defeat his opponent on Friday, I felt I needed to do the same, I wanted to be like him, qualify for the olympics, reason I came with the determination in did in the ring
Sserugo’s last appearance at the Olympics was 2008 at the Beijing edition in China, it was the last time Uganda ever had a boxer at the games.
At the same edition, Katende represented, but he was fighting for Sweden and both fighters lost their preliminary rounds.
Both Sserugo and Katende are bronze medalists at the All Africa Games level, the former in Maputo (2011) while the latter did last year in Congo Brazzaville.
Uganda was also represented at the qualifiers in Cameroon by Sula Segawa, Willy Kyakonye, Mike Ssekabembe and Muzamir Katende.
The latter had a glorious chance of qualifying but the events that happened before he travelled to Cameroon denied him the opportunity.
Muzamir who initially was named in the travelling team was stopped at the airport because his name wasn’t on the initial invitation letter.
He later made the trip but was late for the weigh in, yet there were only four boxers in his welterweight category.
