International Build Up: 3rd July 2016
- Kenya Starlets Vs Uganda Crested Cranes
- Moi International Sports Complex, Kisumu (Kenya)
At most times, the choice for team captains rotates on key pillars as discipline, experience, leadership abilities and skills, one’s individual impact on the team and sheer luck to an extent.
Christine Wanyana’s obvious pick as the Uganda Crested Cranes captain does not surprise many.
The lanky, intelligent and calm defender has all the aforementioned attributes.
Wanyana, who features for Buikwe She Red Stars in the FUFA Women Elite league will captain the national women football team slated to play Kenya on Sunday at the Moi sports complex in Kisumu.
She will be assisted in her role by fellow ‘partner in crime’ and defender, Stellah Nassuna Kaliba.
Head coach, Majidah Nantanda singled out Wanyana as the best choice for her vast experience, composure on and off the field of play as well as the unquestionable leadership abilities.
Wanyana has the experience and discipline to lead this young crop of players
Humbly accepting the responsibility, the towering defender revealed her overwhelming passion to lead the national team.
I am excited to be given such a huge responsibility. However, I am well positioned to inspire and lead many of the young players on the team
The team trained for two days (Wednesday and Thursday) before departing for the Kenyan city of Kisumu.
They are expected to arrive by Friday night before conducting the final session at the Moi Sports complex on Saturday evening.
The match will be Uganda’s first international match for the Crested Cranes in a period spanning as long as four years.
