AFCON 2017 Group D Qualifier: 3rd  September 2016

  • Uganda Cranes Vs Comoros – Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole

Time is fast trickling to the long awaited AFCON 2017 group D qualifier between Uganda Cranes and Comoros.

Uganda Cranes and Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) body has at least got an assurance from the Central Government of the full support – financial, moral, material or otherwise in the build up to the game.

Government through the Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda assured of the full support to the National football team ahead of the September 3rd 2016 decider.

Ruhakana made the assurances on the floor of national parliament while reacting to Ajuri County MP, Denis Obua of what support the Government has in stock for football and sports generally.

The government will support the Uganda Cranes in all aspects as they prepare for the last qualification game.

This is an important match that will shape the destiny of the team.

From the assurance, FUFA needs to make an early follow up procedure and present the necessary budgetary estimates well in time for great preparations.

The necessary preparations could take the shape of early travel for the professionals, hotel bills, training allowances as well as assured match day bonuses and special tokens for all the players, technical team and support staff.

Previously, President Yoweri Museveni supported the national team with a cash donation of Sh300 million for their away encounter against Burkina Faso in March (2016).

He also in November last year chartered a plane for the Cranes to Togo for the first leg of the 2018 Russia World Cup qualifiers when faced with a similar scenario.

The office of the President also funded the Uganda Cranes in the last Afcon qualification campaign to a tune of over Shs1b, in addition to Shs700m for the trip to Comoros in the current campaign.

Uganda only needs a win of any nature to qualify for the Nations cup for the first time in 39 years.
