Namasuba Spartans beat St Mary’s Nabweru 1-0 in the Kampala Region final of the Airtel Rising Stars played at Wankulukuku Stadium on Sunday.
Spartans who lost last season’s final to Kabowa Youth scored through Ismail Bugembe’s own goal in the 3rd minute.
The defender put the ball in his own net while trying to head away an inviting cross.
St Mary’s got an opportunity to net an equalizer in the second half when Joel Wassajja got penalized for handling the ball inside the box, but Arafat Kiggundu hit the post from the penalty spot.
Despite their continued efforts to find the back of the net, the game ended 1-0.
In the girls’ category, Rashida Nankya and Gloria Namugerwa scored for Uganda Marty’s as they beat Alphoenex 2-0 in the finals to become 2016 champions.
A total of 57 players [32 girls and 25 boys] were selected to represent Kampala Region in the inter-regional tournament due next month in Lira.
