The ever escalating rate at which road carnage cases have taken shape in the recent past across the country has obviously sent shock waves across the spine of many citizens on the ‘Pearl of Africa’ land.
The Federation of Motorsport Uganda (FMU), one key sporting stake holder as regards road usage is definitely concerned.
Led by their president, Dusman Okee, they are keen to promote road safety across the divide by joining forces with the Uganda Police, drivers and other users to sensitize about road safety.
Good enough, the road safety sensitization programmes have been on-going in Masaka, Hoima, Jinja and lately in Mabira Forest during the just concluded MOSAC Rally in Jinja.
Okee appealed;
We should not leave this role to only the Police, but we have to take it up collectively so that those who have a biased mind against the Police can learn from us and that is how we shall reduce road accidents.
We call upon the public to be mindful of the safety measures taken by the transport service deliverers because if passengers don’t mind about their lives, then there will be more road accidents
Recently, during the 3rd UN Global Road Safety Campaign at the WHO offices, Dr. Solomon Woldetsadik, representing the WHO country representative (Dr. Wondimagegnehu Alemu), noted road accidents claim close to 186,300 children (in the whole world) every year, 500 every day.
In Uganda alone, there are over 200,000 cases of road accidents per year.
Road accidents cost Ug.shs 1.2 trillion of Uganda’s GDP on the budget.
