Siyabonga Mpontshane has spoken of his admiration for Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and Captain Denis Onyango.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Mpontshane, like Onyango did when he first moved Mamelodi Sundowns, found himself as fourth choice at Mayfair after joining the Buccaneers from Platinum Stars a couple of years ago.
But, the 31-year-old seems to have become Kjell Jonevret’s first choice goalkeeper after starting the last four games for Pirates and he compared his situation to Onyango’s.
Mpontshane told Soccer Laduma: “His (Onyango) situation was similar to mine.
“When he arrived at Mamelodi Sundowns, he was third or fourth choice, but he persevered.
“He was on the bench for a long time but now you won’t touch him the way he is playing. That means he was working hard. He doesn’t shout a lot. He is cool.”
Pirates’ next engagement is against title chasing Bidvest Wits on Thursday evening in a Premiership encounter.
Wits defeated Onyango’s Sundowns 1-0 on Monday to ascend to the top of the Premier Soccer League table.
