Kirinya-Jinja SSS shot-stopper Tom Ikara was named the Busoga Sports Press Association Sports Personality of the month April on Tuesday at Kobil restaurant in Jinja.

Ikara garnered 16 votes as he beat six other nominees including Villa Oromchan (Bul), Derrick Walulya (Bul), Abbey Bogere, Kiriny-Jinja SSS head coach, Jinja SSS the school, Kirinya-Jinja SSS the entire team and Rubuga Youth FC at the inaugural awards.

Despite facing a possibility of being relegated from the Uganda Premier League with his team, Ikara put up notable displays last month, recording three clean sheets. The shutouts came against Police, Bright Stars and SC Villa.

“Busoga press decided to launch the awards in order to recognize our sportsmen and various teams for outstanding performance on a monthly basis. We feel these awards will motivate them to do better and carry our flag higher,” said the Association Chairperson Herbert Mwima.

The awards are expected to happen monthly, with May awards set to take place early next month

Ikara and his team secured a crucial victory against JMC in form of a commanding 4-0 victory in the Eastern derby.

It was a result that could turn out to be the deciding factor as they take their relegation battle to Lweza, another side fighting for survival, on Tuesday at Wankulukuku
