International Masters Arthur Ssegwanyi and Elijah Emojong were in full command of their respective boards on Tuesday as Equity rose top at the ongoing African Chess Club Championship in Cairo, Egypt.
The top two seeds in East Africa got the better of their respective opponents to help their club Equity secure their second win at the event.
The Kenyan giants clobbered Libyan side Khaled Ben Walid 4-0 in the second round, with Ssegwanyi who got a bye in the first round besting Libyan Fide Master Ali A Elmejbri on board one, while Emojong showed his supremacy against Mokhtar Almahjoub rated 1995 on board two.
Their teammates Kenneth Omolo and Kenyan FM Stephen Ouma Sijenyi on boards three and four respectively were too in unforgiving mood as they humbled their respective opponents hence the outcome; 4-0.
Heading into round three, Equity leads the table standings. Hot on their heels are Egyptian sides Alhawar and Eastern Company [A] on second and third respectively.
Kenya’s other representative at this championship KCB suffered another defeat. The side continues to miss their star player FM Harold Wanyama who was with unclear reasons, denied a visa by the Egyptian embassy.
KCB was beaten 3.5:.5 by Alhawar. Alhawar is home to Grandmasters Hesham Abdelrahman and Adly Ahmed, and IM Ali Fahat.
KCB return to action later today against their rivals Equity in the third round hoping to secure their first victory. The side sits seventh.
