Uganda Hippos (national U-20 football team) finished fourth at the 2017 COSAFA U-20 tournament in Zambia.
Uganda fell 3-1 to fellow guest country, Egypt at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe during the third place playoff match on Saturday.
Ashraf Roshdi put the young Pharaohs ahead in the 19th minute.
Uganda’s captain Muhammad ‘Jaggarson’ Shaban made amends with a well headed goal a minute to the halftime break as the two countries returned to the locker rooms tied at one goal apiece. The goal was Shaban’s at the championship that elevated him aloft the rest of the scorers.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, Roshdi once again scored past Eric Kibowa in Uganda’s goal posts.
Kibowa who marked his first start at the tournament was again beaten with an acrobatic effort by Abdelrahman Amr in the 90th minute.
Meanwhile, South Africa won the tournament after overcoming Lesotho 2-1 in the final. Lyle Foster and Kamogelo Sambo scored for the victors whilst Rethabile Mokokoane got the consolation for Lesotho.
Uganda and Egypt were the two invited countries at the tournament.
Individual Awards
The Player of the Tournament award was given to South Africa’ Luvuyo Mkatshana, Muhammed Shaban took home the Golden Boot.
Monaheng Ramalefane was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Lesotho picked up the Fair Play Award.
Uganda’s delegation returns on Monday.
