Samuel Kalwanyi is only returning from a injury but he is already making his presence felt.

In his fourth game since his return, the Silverbacks center had a double-double as Wayland Baptist University Pioneers defeated Mid-America Christian University on Saturday.

Kalwanyi scored 11 points and picked 12 rebounds in the 75-55 win at Hutcherson Center as Pioneers ascended to the top of Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).

Ruben Lopez had team high 16 points and Josh Throns scored 11 points and a picked career-high 11 boards for the No. 21 Wayland Baptist.

It was Wayland’s third win in a row and second straight against a ranked team, having beaten No. 20 USAO on Thursday.

The Pioneers completed the three-game home stand with a 94-74 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Monday to make it four straight victories.

Playing his fifth game, Kalwanyi recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

“Sammy played fantastic again…,” Pioneers head coach Ty Harrelson said of the Ugandan.

J.J. Culver scored 18 points and Kraug Shields had 17 to lead the Pioneers (13-3, 6-2 SAC).

Next up for Wayland are two road games against Oklahoma City University Stars on Thursday, January 18 followed by Central Christian College Tigers on Saturday, January 20.
