Uganda Cup Final

Heathens 20-17 Pirates

Heathens went into the finals of the 2016 Uganda Cup against Pirates wearing the favourites’ tag and they didn’t disappoint.

Played at wing as Heathens tried to accommodate Vincent Mose at fullback, Philip Wokorach’s two first half tries and another by Chris Lubanga and Michael Wokorach were enough as the Kyadondo side won the game 20-17

Conrad Wanyama scored a penalty as the 2009 winners trailed 10-3 at the Legends Rugby Grounds on Saturday.

Pirates’ scrumhalf Wanyama was replaced by Brian Ochan after the former was tackled poorly in at the start of the second half but returned moments later.

Chris Lubanga stretched the lead to 15, capitalising on Philip Wokorach’s long stretch before he was closed down.

But the winger failed to convert for the second time in the match, the other conversion was missed by Moses Mosi.

Philip Wokorach failed to offload the ball to Micheal Wokorach in the Pirates’ 22, Kisiga Timothy picked it and never looked back.

The Pirates’ fullback touched down before Ivan Mogomu converted to narrow Heathens’ lead 15-10.

Pirates gave away a cheap penalty, Chris Lubanga took charge but the boos from Pirates fans got to his head and he squizzed it wide.

Pirates pushed and eventually Ivan Magomu picked the ball from Marvin Odongo’s offload, Burron Kasozi crossed the whiteline, Magomu converted, 17-15 Pirates led for the first time.

A forced medical break was needed by Pirates after Heathens forced their way to the tryline but Pirates were not going to allow that to happen.

Heathens finally found a breakthrough and swung the ball perfectly before Micheal Wokorach touched down, Philip Wokorach failed to convert but still Heathen led 20-17.

It was Pirates fifth final of the Uganda Cup but they will have to wait for another season for them to win their second title.

Heathens were winning a fourth straight title, and are now trying to break their own run when they won six straight titles between 1999 and 2004.
