Lwanga who represented Uganda in 1978

Former Cranes great Tom Lwanga, who appeared at the finals in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978, believes that this crop of players in the national team can do better by winning it for the first time.

“This team has brought happiness to us at the moment they have climbed up easily, but maintaining that climb is not easy,” Lwanga exclusively told Kawowo sports. “They should not just qualify for the finals, but win the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.”

This group of players have been together for at least three years and have grown together they have the ability to qualify for Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in since 1978.

“The situation is similar to us in 1977 when we beat Ethiopia 2-1 to qualify the Ethiopians needed a draw that is exactly that is happening here we just need to beat Harambee stars to book our ticket to the finals,” Lwanga said confidently. “However this is a very dangerous game in such the Kenyans have totally nothing to lose the pressure is on Uganda which will need a lot of mental toughness for the boys.”

Lwanga said that their generation had a mix of super senior players, seniors and junior players who used to play and not play.

They included Kulabigwo, Jimmy Kirunda, Moses Nsereko, Jimmy Semwanga, Ashe Mukasa, Timothy Ayeiko, Polly Ouma, Mubiru “Tanker” others include Rashid Mudin, Jimmy Muguwa, Moses Sentamu, Drati and Lwanga.
