Uganda’s Olympian Harold Wanyama proved that he is back to his best by winning all games to successfully defend his title in the Mombasa Open Chess Tournament held from 8th to 9th October 2011 at Wild Waters in Mombasa, Kenya.
To attain this feat, Wanyama beat his biggest rival for the crown, Kenya’s Ben Magana, Lukoya Atwooli, Vanesh, countrymen Haruna Nsubuga and Simon Gonza to finish the event with 5 points out of a possible 5.
In second position was Uganda’s Zabasajja Memorial champion Simon Gonza with 4 points out of 5. Gonza tied at 4 points with Kenya’s Ben Magana and Uganda’s Haruna Nsubuga but edged the later two with a better tie break.
In the ladies’ category, Uganda’s Christine Namaganda finished in second position after tying with Kenya’s Jane Wambugu at 3 points out of 5 but losing top spot to her Kenyan compatriot owing to an inferior tie break.
