2,500 register for MTN Kampala marathon on opening day of registration

Two thousand five hundred runners have registered for the ninth edition of the MTN Kampala marathon slated for November 27 on the opening day of registration here at the MTN Arena at Lugogo stadium.

According to Data entry manager Michael Niyitegeka, the entry system is managed in South Africa by data system called the Championship.

“We have a system that will have only 20,000 athletes in total and if we get that number before the end of the closure of then we can start the marathon,” Niyitegeka said. “All participants will have a chip embedded on the race number and it cannot be removed by any participant however they need not to destroy this chip because the system will be tracking this chip during the marathon.”

The number is expected to increase this week with several runners eager to race in the 10 kilometer race, the marathon and half marathon at the same time.

This year’s winner will bag 16 million shillings in the 42 kilometer race which is a big increment than last year where the winner took back 8 million shillings.

According to MTN this year’s event will have winners getting bigger prize money in all the races that include also the 10 kilometer race and others.
