Namakula leads on day one at Uganda Ladies Open

Flavia Namakula shot 2 over par 74 gross to take a commanding lead on day one of the Pepsi sponsored Uganda Ladies Open championship

at the par 72 Kitante golf course today.

Namakula scored equal scores of 37 on the front and back nine she started her quest to retain her crown for a second year running by starting with a birdie on hole number 3 and followed that up with another birdie on hole 5, but it was not smoothly costing for her on a wet and slippery course she had bogeys on hole 1,7 while on the back nine she had a birdie on hole 10, and bogeys on hole 11,14 and 18 just near her drivers.

“The greens today where fast, but the putting was a problem especially when the course is wet,” Namakula said. “I am confident with my game and hope to maintain this form and I am not scared of the opposition because I am playing the course and concentrating on my game.”

Tanzania’s Idd Madina was chasing the leader with a score of 7 over par 74 while Zimbabwe’s Claire Minter was eight over par 80 to finish third while Jasper Kamukama was 10 over par 82 and Tanzania’s Sophia Reiffenstein was 11 over par 83.

The tournament has attracted lady golfers from Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda. In the professionals section Vincent Byamukama beat 13 professionals with a score of 143 gross to claim the professionals cash prize of 5 million.
