National Junior Chess Champion, Haruna Nsubuga is the second biggest victim (to fall) in the ongoing Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship after falling at the hands of youngster Richard Tugume in the second round.
Nsubuga’s loss following Arthur Ssegwanyi’s first round upset means that the two players who led the pack in the recent National Chess Championship have started on the wrong note and
given themselves a mountain to climb in the remaining seven rounds.
Kenya’s Matthew Kanegeni and Githingi Hinga won their second round games against Uganda’s Peter Maguzi and Alex Niyonzima respectively. Other tournament favourites on two points after two rounds are Uganda’s Grace Nsubuga, Bob Bibasa and Shadrack Kantinti who beat Festo Owiny, Emma Mwaka and Norman Muwanguzi respectively.
Seven Kenyans and three Tanzanians are participating in the Civil Aviation Authority sponsored event. Other Kenyans in the event are Philip Singe (who is on one point after drawing the first two games), Jacktone Mone, Chazima Terrence, Warren Pollock (Canadian based in Kenya) and Kevins Mutembei.
