Harold Wanyama maintains lead in CAA Rwabushenyi memorial chess championship

Former national chess player Harold Wanyama, fastened his position in the third edition of the CAA sponsored Rwabushenyi Chess regional championship at Hotel Africana after registering a 1-0 over chaser Kenneth Kakooza in round 7.

He will go into his next round with a 6 and half lead and hoping to maintain his momentum as the tournament gets to a close tomorrow with the decisive ninth round and win this championship for a second time. He won the first edition in 2009.

Bob Bibasa beat Kenya’s Matthew Kamau 1-0 to pick six points and remain in the hunt for the crown in this prestigious regional championship that has attracted Kenyan and Tanzanian chess players however it is still a tight race going into the final round.

National chess champion Arthur Segwanyi beat Farouk Fauza, 1-0 to remain in contention for the grand prize. He has six points from seven rounds of action. Grace Nsubuga, Kenya’s Githinji Hinga have 5 points each from the same number of rounds.

15 year old Phiona Mutesi and Ivy Amoko have six points in the ladies race while the youngster participant in the tournament in the women’s race is Gloria Nansubuga, who is 7 years old has five points with Grace Kigeni on same number of points.

The tournament is being used by Uganda Chess Federation as a national ranking for the local players.
