Uganda’s Edwin Ekiring and Wilson Tukire, got off too a commanding start in the main draw at the Uganda International Badminton Championships at Sharing Hall,this morning at Nsambya.
Ekiring started with a two straight 21-11,21-5 win over Turkey’s Murat Sen in a battle of unseeded players as we filed this report he was expected to play Italy’s Wisnu Haryo Putro in the second round after he dumped Brazil’s and the tournament’s seed six Daniel Paiola, 21-9,21-12 in one of the major upsets of the day.
“I am glad to have started well and hope to do better as the tournament progresses.I know Sen and I have beaten him, before however my next opponent is going to give me good run,” Ekiring stated. My next opponent has beaten me at the Turkey International last year,but I won’t be going for revenge.”
Tukire, disposed former African number one player Nigeria’s Ola Fagbemi in three sets 19-21,21-14,21-15 to set himself up against Iran’s and tournament seed seven Kaveh Mehrabi in the next round.
“This was a great win for me and too me it was a perfect way of paying him back after he beating me twice last year at the Thomas Uber Cup in 2010 and also the Uganda International the same year,” Tukire said after the hard fought win over his West African opponent. “I am looking forward to reaching the third round that is my main aim.”
The ladies where yet to get into the action a total of 89 participants are taking part in this international event that has attracted 89 players from 23 nations. Participants are using the tournament as a qualifier for the Summer Olympic games in London in July.
