
National Junior Chess Champion, Haruna Nsubuga beat Olympian Harold Wanyama in the third round of the 2nd phase of Olympiad Qualifiers held at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel to lead the standings after 3 rounds played on Sunday 4th March 2012.
Nsubuga finished off Wanyama in only 20 moves. Wanyama had an awful game and never got out of the opening. A few moves before he resigned, he had a Knight and Bishop undeveloped and still lying at the base. Also on 3 points after 3 rounds is another youngster Rajab Kamoga who beat Francis Makhombe.
The leaders are closely folllowed by Farouk Fauza on 2.5 points after he beat ex Olympian Geoffrey Kanduho in the third round. Other former Olympians had earlier on suffered upsets. Olympian Kantinti, perhaps the most experienced in the Qualifiers lost to Daniel Baagadde on Saturday 3rd March 2012 as Olympian Kenneth Kakooza lost to Simon Gonza in the first round. Kantinti and Kakooza are both on two points after 3 rounds.
The qualifiers continue with fourth round games commencing at 3 pm (this afternoon). A total of 8 games are to be played with more games to be played on Thursday 8th March (Women’s Day) ending on Saturday 10th March 2012.
Twenty two top players are participating iin the 2nd phase of the qualifiers of which the best will proceed to the third phase that features 12 players in a round robin to determine the 4 that will join National Champion, Arthur Ssegwanyi on the National Team. Titled players including FIDE Masters Elijah Emojong, Moses Kawuma and Candidat Masters Bob Bibasa and Patrick Kawuma will only join the fray in the last phase (last 12).
