Uganda off to good start in ICC T20 qualifiers

It’s all smiles in Dubai as African T20 Champions Uganda have managed to ease past USA by four wickets, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Dubai UAE. Uganda who lost the toss were forced to field first as the Americans posted 123/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

Roger Mukasa, with 2/14, applied the brakes on the Americans. The opening batsman was ably supported by his skipper, Davies Arinaitwe whose economical spell of 1/13 rendered Jonathan Sebanja’s expensive 2/32 in three overs meaningless.

The Chase didn’t get off the desirable reply as Mukasa departed on the first over, run out by Elmore Hutchinson with only one run on the ball. Unlike on previous occasion were Uganda would implode after him veteran all-rounder Frank Nsubuga’s superb knock of 30 off 19 balls.

Nsubuga, who led Ugandan to the African title last year, combined with Arinaitwe (27* off 33 balls) in a match winning partnership of 47 runs. Sebanja (11 off 9) finished the job with a six as Uganda eased to the target with four balls to spare.

Uganda plays Oman on Tuesday who in their opener were walloped by Italy by 9. Oman posted a paltry total of 89/9 which the Italians reached with 36 balls to spare. This doesn’t make the game a foregone conclusion as Oman have previously chased down over 300 runs against Uganda. That happened back in 2009 in South Africa.
