Ugandan chess stars fall to Kenyan Gilruth in Northrift International Chess Championship

Uganda’s chess stars fell by the way side as Kenya’s Peter Gilruth claimed the Northrift International Chess Championship held in Eldoret, Kenya last week.

Gilruth had a ruthless run enroute to his deserved win bring down Uganda’s continigent of Kanduho Washaba,Simon Gonza,Rajab Kamoga,Bob Bibasa and national champion Arthur Ssegwanyi

including his compatriot Clement Miheso.

To win the event, Gilruth won six games out of six to finish unbeaten with maximum points in the FIDE rated event arbitrated by Uganda’s FIDE Arbiter, Stephen Kisuze.

Ugandans Rajab Kamoga, Haruna Nsubuga, Arthur Ssegwanyi and Kanduho Washaba finished in second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Simon Gonza and Bob Bibasa finished in seventh and eighth positions out of 15 participants in the men’s category. Uganda’s sole female representative Christine Namaganda won the women’s crown with four points out of a possible five followed by Kenya’s Rose Wabuti.
