Jimmy Kirunda, John Aki-Bua, and John ‘The Best’ Mugabi are rightfully Ugandan sports heroes. If little known Brenda Masendi has the chance to propel herself to a world title, then this modest female kick boxer should begin being mentioned in the same breath as the above eminent countrymen.
Her May 11 encounter against world champion, Ukrainian Lena Ovychinnikova is her first real challenge on a title shot in the 58Kgs featherweight category. At 26 Masendi has fought only two professional fights in the last two years and not
because she has no time. “Am relaxed with the sport because fellow ladies are scared, you win some today tomorrow they don’t want to come back the next time,” Masendi said.
Quick with her feet the assistant matron at the Luzira prisons training centre also has a hidden strong point that she hasn’t probably observed, agility. Though she admits that a lot has to be done to improve her boxing technique in order to have a fistful of good shots, combined with a rapid punching style. In superb condition, her footwork, self-control will prove impossible for Ovychinnikova to tame.
In Luzira prisons the mention of her name causes excitement but Masendi would love to see lovers of the sport come to her rescue. “I luck support and facilities, right now am just trying because I hate disappointment on the last minute,” she said. A clash with the Ukrainian at the UMA main exhibition hall would bring Masendi and Uganda the respect they deserve as s porting country.
