From the time the formidable Cranes’ trio hang up their national team boots, local football body, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and the technical staff have often raised the fans’ morales with new summons. The Martin Mutumba Kayongo hype just after Redbull’s Ibrahim Sekagya, David Obua and Nestroy Kizito had quit national team duty seemed to have given a new phase to our front power force.
FUFA even had to run up and down so as to secure the important documents for Swedish based player and with the then looming sights and sounds (youtube videos), bagging another away result in Brazaville neared the travelling side. But to many’s dismay, the lad could only wait longer for his first appearance in the Cranes’ jersery as we suffered a 3-1 loss and the rest being history.
Now with three must-win ties in June, another Bryan Massa is being seen by coach Bobby Williamson as a weapon to tear down the opponents. Just like Mutumba, web video site, Youtube has played its part in exposing and not making him a ‘Kiwaani’ sort of player. Fine, hunting for the players with Ugandan origin from overseas is a good effort from the Mengo soccer bosses but evident impact on the pitch is what will give their initiative full positive backing.
And if the quality of these players is below par, then genuine local talent should not be overlooked. Often and perharps not in Uganda only, home based players are dropped for players based abroad even when quality says different.
