Uganda Cranes Cyprus based striker Massa Geoffrey has been ruled out of the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Angola on 3rd June away in Luanda due to a persistent knee injury. The striker who is always Bobby Williamson’s first choice is however expected to be available for the Senegal and Congo Brazzaville matches.
According to Daily Monitor, after yesterday’s training session at Namboole that saw 20 players take part, the scot said, “Massa’s got a knee knock, which he arrived with. He’s rested a few days but he still got a problem and he needs to get treatment on that. I’m not 100 per cent sure he will be available for the Angola match.”
This comes as a blow to the side given the number of fixtures to play in such a limited period of time. However, the Cranes Coach is not worried as he believes there are lots of options in South Africa’s based Sserunkuma Geoffrey (16 goals in 22 caps) and Hamis Diego Kiiza who has had a brilliant season with Tanzania giants Yanga FC scoring 22 goals in all competitions for the club.
Daily Monitor quotes Bobby: “We have many strikers. Geoffrey Sserunkuma is available, Hamis Kiiza is available,” assured Bobby, “We have options as I said and if we keep working hard, we can beat anybody on our day.”
Kawowo sports has however learnt that El Merrick midfielder Mike Mutyaba has also been ruled out following an injury he sustained on club duty on Monday this week.
The duo is not only the injury concern of the team as Kenyan based midfield gem Musa Mudde is also a major doubt for the Angolan tie. We recently reported on how the former Simba SC midfielder suffered an injury in the first round season ender between Sofapaka and AFC Leopards last week. Mudde was given a week’s rest by his club’s medics but it seems his ankle is far from ready to play. The Cranes play Angola in Luanda on 3rd June before hosting Senegal and Congo Brazzaville on the 9th and 16th of June respectively at Namboole.
