SC Villa captain Steven Bengo on Wednesday joined the Cranes camp as the team prepares for its second 2014 World Cup qualifier against Senegal. He was part of the 30 plus players who turned up for the evening match training that ended 3-1 against the U20 side, Hippos.
Cranes coach Bobby Williamson has always been of praise towards the sleek midfielder, whose ability to unlock defenses landed the Scot’s first silver ware, the 2008 CECAFA challenge cup in Kampala.
“Steven (Bengo) is a very special player and am in need of more left sided players, unfortunately some of them picked up injuries,” said Williamson.
Bobby had initially summoned Martin Mutumba and Mike Mutyaba but the latter had to bow out after he picked up an injury at club level. Williamson was quick to insist that Bell Super league footballer for the month of March is not guaranteed of a starting place come Saturday.
“He has an opportunity in the next few days to show me that he is up to the task,” he said. Williamson hopes to use the former URA midfielder in the wings because of his size and unique abilities. “I prefer Bengo in the wide area where he can beat and go around defenders.” “But he is a versatile player and I like versatility in my players,” the 50 year old added.
