Top seed Jean Claude Gasigwa of Rwanda set the stage for the seeded players at the prestigious Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open championship at the Lugogo tennis center with a easy winner over Hassan Sas 6-1,6-1 in the first round.
The 2008 winner moved onto the next stage with ease overruning his unseeded opponent on court two without a single fight. “I glad to have started this way and I hope I can maintain this momentum going into the final come Saturday,” Gasigwa said. “I disappointed that the defending champion Duncan Mugabe is not available to defend his crown I was looking forward to battle him in the tournament.”
Gasigwa’s compatriot and seed two Dienone Habiyambere advanced to the next stage in similar fashion with a straight set win over unseeded Dennis Ofuyuru 6-3,6-2. Seed eight Haruna Harerimana from Rwanda beat his countryman Ernest Kayiranga 7-5 6-2.
David Oringa seed six swept James Bayego 6-2,6-1 to sail to the next round tomorrow. The Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open is the biggest event on the Uganda Lawn Tennis Association calendar and has attracted players from Uganda,Rwanda,Tanzania and Kenya. The men’s main draw has attracted 32 players while the ladies has a draw of 18 which includes last year’s winner Carolyn Odour.
The men’s winner will walk away with a trophy and 2.5 million shillings while the ladies winner will win a trophy and 2 million shillings.
