The switch of games from Namboole to Makerere perharps buried Olympic hopes but the passion and spirit of competiton did not fade out among a recognisable number of athletes that turned up for National Track and Field events at Makerere grounds yesterday.

Out of the 21 teams that took part, Prisons emerged victorious after picking 215 points in total.

Even without the electronic timers, many athletes put up respectable results, although they were still short of the London Games’ standards.

Prisons were unstoppable in the women’s sect, with long distance athlete Adero Nyakisi winning double gold in the 5000m and 10000m.

Prisons’ Caroline Aber won silver in the javelin and shot put, falling behind Serere’s Lucy Aber and UCU’s Janneth Acan in turn.

Police’s Ali Ngaimoko crossed the finish line first in the 200m in 21.3. Justine Bayigga, Ngaimoko’ teammate did the same in the ladies’ 200m in 24.4.

Top country’s marathoner Stephen Kiprotich finished first and second in the 5000m and 10000m in 13:53.9 and 28:54.3.
