Forget the cry of athletes not being funded for a moment, this will leave hopefuls and patriots shocked. Maputo All Africa Games 800m gold winner Annet Negesa has pulled out of the London Olympics at the eleventh hour. Unlike Moses Kipsiro who opted out of last year’s World Athletics Championships in Daegu and this year’s Africa Senior Championships in Porto Novo due to death threats and fatigue, Negesa pulled out of the world’s biggest Gams due to injury.
According to Rafael Kasajja, Negesa’s coach, the national two lap race record holder suffered an achilles tendon injury at the 13th Africa Crosscountry tournament in Cape Town back in February. “She has been with this injury for five months,” Kasajja said. “She would have run but the doctors said that she rests” he added. She underwent an X-ray three days back.
The Igamba-born athlete will miss a chance to run at the XXX Olympiad, something that many will remain shocked and dissapointed with. Negesa won bronze at the Canada World Junior Athletics Championships in Moncton. Her time of 1:59.24 she ran at the Hengelo-Boen Athletics meet in Holland back in May not only earned her a slot to the London Olympics but also rewrote the national record. Total dissapointment!!! Many looked up to her to emulate steeplechaser Dorcus Inzikuru..
