CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Will be Held in Uganda - Insists Musonye

Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) General Secretary insists Uganda will host this year’s Senior Challenge Cup despite the Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya insisting that Kenya is the rightful host. According to Kenyan sports website Michezoafrika.com, Musonye has warned the Kenyan federation and Nyamweya in particular not to involve politics in the issue saying that it was agreed that the sponsors of the competition decide the host nation.

“It was agreed with sponsors that the first two years be held in Dar es Salam and from then, the sponsor will have an obligation as to where they want the tournament hosted”, said Musonye before asserting that Kenya was just a standby host for this year. However, the FKF held a press conference this Friday morning and told the media that Kenya are the hosts for the edition and denied having recieved any communication from CECAFA on the change of venue.

These claims were later refuted by Musonye. “CECAFA wrote to FKF a few days ago and informed them of changes but how come they deny this funny. Nyamweya (FKF Boss) should not involve CECAFA in fights and we won’t be intimidated by his threats. CECAFA will be held in Uganda”, he said.

Kawowo Sports’ effort to talk to the competitions’ sponsors (East African Breweries) on their decision on who to host were futile. When reached, Rogers Mulindwa who doubles as FUFA and CECAFA Head of Communications told Kawowo Sports that as the Uganda federation, they are aware of what is going on but can only confirm to the media after everything is resolved but insisted they are ready to host the tournament.

“We are aware of what is going as a federation but will only confirm after the issues between FKF and CECAFA are resolved though we are ready,” he told Kawowo Sports. The tournament is scheduled to take place between 24th November and 8th December. Uganda last hosted the event in 2009 and has won it a record 12 times.
