Uganda Lacrosse championship will this weekend kick off with a cup tournament at MUBS play grounds starting Saturday the 4th August, 2012, with the league resuming later on in November. Lacrosse is one of the new sporting disciplines in Uganda and it was introduced one year back but has gotten much support from the USA. Uganda is currently the only African Country that plays lacrosse.
Lacrosse is played using a small rubber ball and a long-handled stick called a crosse or lacrosse stick, mainly played in the United States and Canada. It is a contact sport which requires padding. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose mesh designed to catch and hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the objective of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent’s goal, using the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball to do so. Defensively, the objective is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning.
Currently the Uganda league features very few clubs among which include: – Kings, Strikers, Warriors and Oneonta, but there are plans of increasing the number of teams that will participate in the league, this season.
Oneonta are the defending league champions but will focus on the upcoming Kings Cup tournament at MUBS ground on Saturday the 4th August, 2012.
The tournament will feature five teams to include Panthers, Oneonta, Warriors, Kings and Strikers.  Panthers who are the defending champions at the tournament have already qualified for the semi finals which will be played on the 11th August with finals being played later on in the day.
In the big match of the day, Warriors the current Eid cup champions will play Oneonta who are also league champions.  Players to watch in the Warriors team include Geoffrey Anywr, Douglas Nyakana (captain) and John Paul, though Oneonta have stars Patrick Orina and Samuel Ddungu, all passed fit to play.
