Oneonta 0 Warriaz 3
Kings 1 Strikers 1
Warriaz showed the intention of winning this years lacrosse kings cup in a high gear as they devastated league champions Oneonta with a 3-0 rout on Saturday.
From the outset this match was seemed to be a thrilling encounter. Warriaz were the underdogs prior to the game, but by the end of 60 minutes that label was convincingly removed as they beat Oneonta the league champions and walked away victorious. This must be considered one of the most exciting and visually pleasing games of lacrosse Uganda has seen to date. The standard on both sides is a testament to the increasing levels of commitment and talent which is building in clubs. The ball movement was slick, but neither team could find an opening in the first 5 minutes. After some good team play, Warriaz settled and Jovan Omitta aka Kiviri took his first dodge of the day, splitting down the right and burying the ball in the bottom left corner. This was to be the first of 4 for Kiviri who is proving to be a very clinical and assured finisher both from the dodge and from standing. The first quarter was hard-fought but little could split the sides.
The second quarter was, again, very close as all the teams worked them selves but failed to score. It’s in the second quarter where yellow cards were dished out to Oneonta players for foul play as they appeared to lose focus on the game as they went off for one minute each. In the third and fourth quarter the game opened up as the Warriaz were clearing all the balls from their defense and mostly used long passes which caught the Oneonta’s off guard and conceded more two goals from captain Douglas Nyakaana and the last from Oscar Wodero Warriaz attacks man which eliminated them out of the Kings Cup tournament.
Mean while in the other encounter strikers managed to beat the Kings in the face off through a Kenneth Kasule goal but in the normal play they had settled for a one-all draw with goal keeper Jimmy scoring an own goal for the kings and latter on Strikers leveled it up with Bokeche’s goal.
Overall this was a fantastic performance, possibly the biggest Warriaz win to date. Oneonta’s reputation speaks for itself but with such a convincing win Warriaz are back on the map. Confident, determined and skilled are just a few words one could put on their display. However, teamwork describes it best. Working hard for each other is allowing the talent in the team to shine.
